What should I bring to the islands?
Bring tickets/ID, money or cards for additional purchases, a water bottle to stay hydrated, snacks, sunscreen (SPF 50+), a hat, a waterproof bag for electronics, a towel, and a change of clothes. These items will ensure you have a comfortable and safe visit.
What is the best time to visit?
The dry season (March to October) is the best time to visit with clear weather and excellent visibility for snorkeling. The wet season (November to February) has a higher risk of rain and rougher seas, but you'll find fewer crowds if you prefer a quieter experience.
What should I wear?
Wear lightweight, breathable clothing that provides good sun protection. Bring swimwear or a rash guard for water activities. Don't forget a hat, sunglasses, and water shoes or sandals that can get wet. These items will keep you comfortable and protected throughout your island visit.
How do I book tickets?
You can book tickets online via Easybook at www.easybook.com or walk in to the Easybook counter at South Jetty. You can also call +6012-2271025 for phone bookings. Walk-ins are welcome during operating hours.
Can I book tickets on the same day?
Yes, absolutely! You can walk up to the Easybook counter at South Jetty and purchase tickets on the same day. Availability depends on boat schedules and capacity, so arriving early is recommended, especially during peak times.
Island Information
What are the differences between the islands?
Gaya Island is known for flying fox encounters and jungle trails. Sapi Island is perfect for relaxation with hiking opportunities. Mamutik Island offers the best snorkeling with clear shallow waters. Manukan Island has the most facilities, including restaurants and is ideal for photography.
Which island is best for families?
Mamutik Island is ideal for families. It has easy, safe swimming in shallow waters, excellent facilities including rest areas, and family-friendly activities. The snorkeling is spectacular for all ages and swimming abilities.
What activities are available on the islands?
You can enjoy snorkeling, swimming, scuba diving, kayaking, jet skiing, banana boat rides, parasailing, sea walking, BBQ facilities, jungle hiking trails, and flying fox encounters (on Gaya Island). Each island offers different activity options.
Schedule & Timing
When is the first and last boat departure?
The first departure is usually between 8:00–8:30 AM. The last boat to the islands departs between 1:00–1:30 PM. The last return boat from the islands is at 4:00 PM. Always check the daily schedule for specific times.
How long is the boat journey?
The journey to the islands takes approximately 25 minutes. Travel between islands is much shorter, typically 5–15 minutes depending on which islands you're visiting.
Pricing
How much do ferry tickets cost?
Island ferry tickets are priced by number of islands: 1 island RM45 (adult)/RM40 (child), 2 islands RM55/RM50, 3 islands RM65/RM60, 4 islands RM75/RM70. Marine park conservation fees are RM8 (Malaysian)/RM25 (International) for adults and RM5/RM20 for children.
What other fees should I know about?
Additional activity fees include: Jet Ski RM250, Banana Boat RM45/person, Snorkeling Tour RM90/person, and equipment rental RM10 per item. Life jacket rental for island activities is RM10.
Is there a child price?
Yes, children aged 3-11 receive discounted pricing. Infants under 3 travel free. Always confirm child age categories and pricing at the ticket counter.
Facilities
Is there parking available?
There is no on-site parking at Jesselton Point (staff parking only). We recommend using JQ Central car park, which is a short walk to the jetty. It's convenient and secure.
What food options are available?
The terminal has several cafés serving hot and cold beverages. Hawker stalls are located at the terminal offering local snacks and meals. Jesselton Quay shopping area is nearby with additional dining options.
Can I store my luggage?
Yes, luggage storage is available at the Counter Information desk. Please enquire about storage capacity and rates.
Is there a prayer room?
Yes, a surau (prayer room) is available at South Jetty for the convenience of Muslim visitors.
Safety
What happens if the weather is bad?
Standard tickets are non-refundable if you cancel due to personal reasons. However, if the boat operator cancels due to bad weather or safety concerns, you receive a full refund or can reschedule at no extra cost. Always check weather and boarding status before heading to the terminal.
Are life jackets provided?
Yes, life jackets are provided for all boat rides at no extra cost. You can rent a life jacket for island activities (snorkeling, swimming) for RM10. All passengers receive a safety briefing before departure.
Operators
How do I choose the right operator?
Consider your trip type, group size, and required services. All operators at South Jetty are licensed and registered with the marine park authority. Read reviews, compare services, and ask staff for recommendations based on your needs.
Are all operators licensed?
Yes, all operators at South Jetty are fully licensed and registered with the authorities. Only licensed boats are allowed to operate in Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park, ensuring your safety and the environment.
Accessibility & Other
Is the terminal accessible for wheelchairs?
The terminal has accessible facilities on flat ground. However, boarding the boat may require assistance. Please inform staff in advance so they can provide appropriate support.
Is it suitable for senior visitors?
Yes, the terminal has easy-access facilities and helpful staff to assist senior visitors. Shorter boat rides can be arranged upon request. Life jackets are provided for safety.
Are baby facilities available?
Yes, a diaper changing room is available at the terminal for the convenience of families with infants.
Can I fish on the islands?
Fishing is not available at Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park (TARP) to protect the marine ecosystem. If you're interested in fishing, you can arrange a private boat charter outside the marine park.
Are there island resorts I can stay at?
Yes, several resorts operate on the islands: Gaya Island has Gaya Island Resort, Gayana, and Bunga Raya Resort. Manukan Island has Manukan Island Resort and Sutera Sanctuary Lodges. These offer overnight stays with full facilities.
What is your lost and found policy?
Jesselton Point is not responsible for lost items. However, items found may be held at the Counter Information desk. Always check with staff if you've lost something.
How far is the terminal from the city and airport?
Jesselton Point is approximately 5 minutes from Kota Kinabalu city center and about 25 minutes from Kota Kinabalu International Airport by car.
How do I book for Mengalum Island?
Mengalum Island (Magic Island) bookings are handled at Counter A16. Contact staff at the terminal for information about Mengalum Island packages and availability.
Is there a zip line between islands?
Yes, there's an exciting zip line activity that connects Gaya Island to Sapi Island. This thrilling experience offers scenic views and is popular with adventure seekers.
Is there a buggy service at the terminal?
Yes, buggy service is available at South Jetty for RM1.00 per ride, helping visitors move around the terminal area.
How do I book the Labuan Ferry?
The Labuan Ferry has moved to Kota Kinabalu Port (not South Jetty). You can book online at labuanpay.my. The ferry connects Kota Kinabalu to Labuan with regular scheduled services.
